The view from above
He who sits in the heavens laughs.
Psalm 2:4a
I count myself blessed to live in a small village on the side of a hill in Snowdonia. When I have the opportunity, I love going up to the top of the hill and looking out at the view – it never disappoints, as the picture from last Sunday afternoon will prove! There is something wonderfully relaxing about being high above looking down at the world. The cars on the roads seem slower and the towns and villages are put into perspective as I look at field upon field of green grass and the sea stretching away over the horizon. It feels as if you can see everything from up there, and everything seems so small and insignificant.
What do you think God sees?
As I stood at the top of the hill looking down at the world below, I could not help but think how wonderful it is that God is above us all and nothing is outside of his gaze. It is true that we do not know the exact location of heaven, but we know that it is real, and we know that God is above us and that he sees all. If I, a finite creature, felt that what was below was small, how much more real is this verse as we consider God – the eternal, supreme One looking at a small planet in his massive creation!
This has been a comfort to God’s children for thousands of years. Yes, we may feel small and lack the resources of the world, but we are the children of the king who sits in heaven and laughs. May this be a comfort to you today, and may it give perspective as you navigate another day on this small bit of rock that we call earth.
