To be a Christian is a great privilege. On repenting of personal sin and believing in Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord, a person is able to enjoy many amazing blessings, privileges and experiences. We can be thankful for our privileges, but we must also face our responsibilities.
Are we faithful and diligent in fulfilling our ministry and using our gifts in the church? Are we eager to be of use to God and his people, or are we lazy and indifferent? These are questions we need to consider both personally and as churches.
Acknowledging that each Christian has a role with a responsibility to help strengthen and nourish the church, we must ask another question: what about our own personal commitment and ministry? This is a question we should regularly ask ourselves. Whatever our ‘ministry’ in the church, we must be honest with ourselves. There may be periods when the church work is flourishing, but there will also be more difficult and discouraging periods. For various reasons, we may conclude that perhaps we are achieving very little, or that what we are able to do is of little worth. As a result, we feel disheartened and tempted to give up. In addition, we may feel guilty because we know that things should be different.
It is the aim of this booklet to deal with some of these questions, in order to encourage us to press on in serving the Lord in his church. We will pay particular attention to the words of Paul in 2 Corinthians chapter 4 for it is a great comfort to know we are not the first to feel ourselves under pressure in the work of Jesus Christ. That was Paul’s experience at times, and we should not be surprised, therefore, if we find ourselves in similar difficulties.
It was Gwynn Williams’s prayer that the content would be helpful, challenging, comforting and a blessing to all who read it.
