There are preachers and there are those rare preachers we would always want to listen to. Anyone who has sat under Eric Alexander, the former minister of St George’s Tron, Glasgow knows that he is in that rare group of gospel ministers. It is a real treat then to at last have some of his material in print. Here gathered together are a series of addresses first given in connection with the Philadelphia Conference on Reformed Theology. In sixteen chapters, under three headings, he considers the character of God, the salvation of God and the church of God.
Each chapter of the book is essentially an exposition of scripture and in the author’s own words, ‘the real value of this book will be the measure in which it helps you to understand and obey the truths of the bible.’ And what the author wants Christians to know particularly is just how great is the salvation that their great God and Saviour has given to them. With the order and precision that is a hallmark of his preaching the author steers us through such topics as the greatness of God, sovereignty of God, regeneration, substitution, purpose of church, plea for revival and many more. Laced with a rich vein of biblical insight as he tackles each subject, full of that warmth for which his pulpit ministry is known, and liberally scattered throughout with quotes and anecdotes from his many years of pastoral ministry that illuminate his points. Its solid content combined with the author’s passion to communicate make it a rich and refreshing read.
