Book reviews Evangelism Sept/Oct 2010 — 29 October 2010
Tales of the Unexpected (Starter Pack)*

This course aims to bring the teaching of Jesus to a broad range of people, including those who normally have difficulty accessing the Christian message. No previous Bible knowledge is assumed and each session is based on the NIRV (New International Reader’s Version) of the Bible. The course is based around three parables from Luke’s gospel in four sessions: the rich fool, the runaway son, the stay-at-home son and the Pharisee and the tax collector.

The text of each passage is printed in the study booklet. Each session starts with a reading of the story and some basic questions to answer, followed by some questions to think about. Then comes the first of two DVD teaching slots. The innovative feature of this DVD is that you can choose your presenter – a man (Pete Woodcock) or a woman (Lizzie Smallwood). Both give simple teaching on each parable, with some application, and what they say is repeated in the study booklet in the form of bullet points. There then follows some more time with the study booklet – answering further questions. Then a second DVD clip to watch and more questions, with the session ending with a real-life story on DVD (testimony) to end with.

We tried out the study and the DVD as a home group (we are a small group of various ages and backgrounds) to assess whether this is something we would use. Here are our comments, in no particular order:

Negatively

  • Editing and camera work frustrating at times.
  • Complicated (but accurate) explanation of the mercy-seat. Too long in one go.

Positively

  • Not slick, but real. Warm, open and friendly.
  • Fast-moving, not dull. Variety keeps your attention.
  • Some good, direct questions.
  • Testimonies are excellent.
  • Very adaptable – can do it in pairs, in a group.
  • Suitable for a broad range – from teenagers upwards.

Conclusion: It would be a good DVD for churches to use in evangelistic outreach. It could reach many with the gospel.
