God’s Big Design: Life as He intends it to be

Vaughan Roberts, IVP, £5.99, ISBN: 978-1-84474-071-0Why do you work? To pay the bills? To fund gospel work? Does work have any inherent value? Or is it just a necessary evil? Those are important questions, especially for those who spend forty hours a week in a secular work place.

These are some of the questions on one of the areas addressed in this book. This is not a book dealing with the science issues of creation-evolution, rather it assumes the truth of the opening chapters of Genesis and is an excellent 120-page introduction to a Christian worldview and what God’s plan is for human beings in His world. It follows on from the author’s previous books (God’s Big Picture and Life’s Big Questions) which traced the Bible’s story line from Genesis to Revelation. Now this book focuses on the first two chapters of Genesis and shows how they provide us with a blue print for life.

It starts by looking at the implications of the fact that the world is created by God rather than being here by chance, and then has four chapters on God’s design for humanity, for the world, for sex and marriage, and for work. In each chapter he shows how, what the Fall has ruined, God has redeemed through Christ. Each chapter finishes with a Bible study to work through on key Old or New Testament passages. The whole book is concise and easy to read, and introduces us to the huge practical implications of a doctrine of creation. I highly recommend it.
